Course Information
Unit 1 - Healthy Eating and Physical Activity – (5 weeks)
Healthy eating and physical activity are important for kids and teens to grow strong and stay healthy. This means learning about good food choices, like eating breakfast and drinking water, and understanding how family, community, and culture can influence what we eat and how we exercise. It also includes finding ways to stay active, knowing the benefits of exercise, and making healthy changes in our daily lives.
Unit 2 - Illness & Disease – (4 weeks)
Traditional healing, like First Nations and Métis practices, and modern medicine both help people stay healthy and manage illnesses. These approaches work together to prevent and treat health problems like diabetes, depression, or HIV/AIDS by combining natural remedies, ceremonies, and new technology. Learning about these methods helps us understand how to take care of our body, mind, and spirit.
Unit 3 - Healthy Relationships – (4 weeks)
Building healthy relationships means being kind, listening to others, and learning how to handle disagreements calmly. It’s important to know the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, use good communication, and respect different opinions. Practicing these skills helps everyone feel included and keeps our friendships strong.
Unit 4 - Personal Responsibility for Safety – (5 weeks)
Staying safe means knowing the rules and making smart choices in different places, like at home, online, or in your community. This includes following safety rules, like wearing a helmet when biking, being careful online, and listening to safety plans. By being responsible, you help keep yourself and others safe.
Unit 5 - One’s Sense of Identity – (3 weeks)
Your identity is how you see yourself and how you feel about yourself, which can be shaped by your relationships with others. Friends, family, and your environment can make you feel proud, confident, or even unsure sometimes. Learning to understand yourself and make good choices helps you grow in a positive way.
Unit 6 - Healthy Stress Management – (3 weeks)
Stress is what we feel when we are worried or overwhelmed, and everyone reacts to it differently. To manage stress, we can try helpful strategies like talking to someone we trust, exercising, writing in a journal, or practicing relaxation. These tools can help us feel calmer and handle tough situations better.
Unit 7 - Informed Decision Making – (3 weeks)
Making good decisions about things like eating healthy, staying active, and staying safe involves taking responsibility and communicating clearly. When we think carefully about our choices, like how to handle stress or disagreements, we can make better decisions for our health and well-being. Being responsible helps us take control of our actions and make positive choices.
Unit 8 - Designing & Following an Action Plan – (5 weeks)
Creating action plans helps us set goals and take steps to make healthy choices. For example, you could make a plan to eat better or exercise more, then follow the steps to make it happen. Afterward, you can think about what worked well and what you can improve for next time.
