Learning Program

Overview

Bishop Murray High School is structured in a way to meet the unique needs of our students.  We are a small alternate high school with a maximum enrolment of approximately 150 students. Our small size and staffing allow for a personal, flexible approach to the education and personal growth of our students.

The school's academic program offers education to students in grades 9 to 12. Students can earn credits at each of three levels: regular, modified, and alternate in most courses that are available in other high schools. This multi-level approach is made possible by the structure of the classrooms and the methods of assigning staff.

We offer students and their families a counselling-based educational opportunity that focuses on the total development of the student including areas of social skills, academic skills, and spiritual growth.  Students are able to access our services only through a referral from a Greater Saskatoon Catholic School as our program is intended to meet the needs of students who might find a larger mainstream Saskatoon Catholic high school challenging.

Block Program:  Regular Credits

The Block Program offers regular credits which can be earned in 21 days.  Subjects are taught for 5 periods each day.  In addition to offering a "different" approach to earning credits, this class offers up-graders or students needing only a few credits a chance to matriculate. Students may register for only one class if they wish.

One Room School:  Modified Credits

The One Room School (ORS) offers modified and some regular credits to students who have difficulty in a typical educational setting.  Subjects are taught for 5 periods each day, for 21 school days.  Attendance is closely monitored and a credit is granted only when work and attendance requirements are met.  Any student unsuccessful in two blocks of the One Room School will be at risk of losing their placement at Bishop Murray.

Career and Work Exploration Program

At Bishop Murray High School, we believe that part of our mandate is to provide students with the experiences and skills to excel in the work place.  In order to achieve this we have developed a work experience program that is mandatory for all students in grade 10, 11, and 12.  The program consists of an in-class Career and Work Exploration 10 course that all students must successfully complete before participating in a work placement.

During work placements it is expected that the student adhere to the policies and expectations put forth by their employer.  Failure to successfully complete a work placement puts a student's placement at Bishop Murray at risk.  Further details of the work experience program will be shared with students as they enter the program.

Evening Career and Work Exploration

Evening Career and Work Exploration is a program available to students. The course includes 30 hours of in-class instruction, and an assigned 70 hour placement either after school or on weekends to gain their Career and Work Exploration credit.  Registration for this program can be done by calling the school (659-7710) or by contacting a guidance counsellor at your home school.
