English as an Additional Language
The English as an Additional Language (EAL) / English as a Second Dialect (ESD) Program is designed for students whose first language is not English or whose dialect is a variation of English. EAL/ESD students are provided with a variety of opportunities to develop their English. The content is individualized with a balanced emphasis on speaking, reading, writing and listening. Instruction is provided by trained, experienced instructors - right at our school.
Our English Language Learners are a mix of new Canadians (immigrant and refugee), students from our International Student Program and Canadian-born students who do not speak English in their homes. The amount of time spent in EAL/ESD depends on the individual's needs. Tutorial classes are offered to help the student in other academic areas. Tutorials are non-credit courses.
Settlement Support Workers
Students and families may use the services of our Settlement Support Workers in Schools (SSWIS), who can help with settlement issues and finding newcomer services. This program is offered in partnership with the Saskatoon Open Door Society and Citizenship Immigration Canada. Ask about SSWIS workers at your school.
How to register
To register at a school, contact our Registration Centre for Newcomers, at 306-659-7000. The centre is located at our main office in downtown Saskatoon at 420 22nd Street East.
At the registration centre, all students from one family are registered in one visit. Each child completes a language assessment to ensure their new school will be ready to provide the services they need. Families are provided with information on school locations and programming so they can determine which school(s) to register at. Student information and documentation is checked to ensure registration is completed smoothly.
