St. Anne students honour Nobel Laureate Doctors Without Borders
Continuing an annual fall tradition, Dustin Kasun’s Grade 7 and 8 students at St. Anne School led an event at Rotary Park Peace Plaza to recognize a past Nobel Laureate.
Hosted and sponsored by Saskatoon Nutana Rotary Club, and in partnership with Meewasin Valley Authority, a brick will be installed recognizing 1999 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières).
Students shared what they have learned about the humanitarian organization that offers medical aid and support in poverty-stricken and war-torn areas. Funded almost exclusively by donors, volunteers have helped in some of the poorest countries in the world, in areas facing Ebola outbreaks, Afghanistan, and most recently Ukraine—to name just a few.
Choosing peace and kindness—and showing that through action—were themes mentioned by students, Rotary representatives and St. Anne Principal Kris Hanson. Quoting the 1999 acceptance speech, GSCS Board of Education trustee Wayne Stus spoke about the need to respect God-given dignity in all people is more important than offering material assistance to those in need.
The brick will be installed at the Rotary Park Peace Plaza, located on the south shore of the South Saskatchewan River near the Victoria Bridge in Saskatoon.
